Est. MCMLXXII  ·  Somewhere quiet

Tomorrow, cultivated.

We are a small society of scientists, gardeners and incurable optimists, working on the questions the rest of the world is too busy to ask. You have probably never heard of us. That is entirely by design.

Our mission

Everything can get a little better. All at once.

The Society began in 1972 with a modest grant, a borrowed seaplane and one immodest question: what if the great problems of humanity (hunger, sleep, loneliness, weather) are really one problem, observed from different angles?

So we went somewhere the angles are easier to see. Far from noise, far from interruption, far from most maps. There we built a community where every resident is both a researcher and, gently, a subject of research.

We publish nothing. We patent nothing. We simply improve things, and then let the world wonder why they improved.

“Observe kindly. Record everything.”
DEPT. 01

Soil & Climate

Crops that ask for less and give more. Rain, by appointment.

DEPT. 02

Sleep & Wellbeing

Rest that is deeper, shorter, and remarkably pleasant.

DEPT. 03

Signals & Listening

Understanding everything that is broadcast, intended or not.

DEPT. 04

Tides & Gravity

The ocean keeps a schedule. We are learning to read it.

DEPT. 05

Community Harmony

Happiness, measured daily and adjusted as necessary.

DEPT. 07

[ discontinued ]

Departments 01–05 are thriving. We do not discuss Department 06.

The outposts

Seven outposts. One family.

Each outpost is self-sufficient, connected by footpaths, cable and trust. Residents rotate every ninety days, so everyone gets to see a little of everything, though never quite all of it.

The field bulletin

Good news from the canopy.

DAY 3,117 · HARVEST
412 kg

Sweet-potato festival declared a triumph

Outpost Hollow Fern exceeded every projection this season. The cooks have requested that no one suggest a fourth recipe. Thank you to whoever left the extra crates by the north fence. We did not order them, but we are very grateful.

Crates have been returned to the north fence, as is customary.
DAY 3,115 · HARMONY

Morale index reaches an all-time high

98.6% of residents report feeling “content” or “very content.”

The remaining 1.4% have been invited for a friendly chat.
DAY 3,112 · LUMEN

New light panels installed

Volunteers in the trial now sleep 2.3 hours less and say they have never felt better. Several report the same dream about a staircase.

This is normal.
DAY 3,109 · CHOIR

Listening post records a lovely melody

We are still working out where it comes from. In the meantime it has become the canteen's unofficial anthem.

Please do not hum it near the radio equipment.
DAY 3,104 · WELCOME

Please welcome Cohort 14!

Twenty-two new friends arrived on Tuesday's seaplane, rested and smiling. Orientation is going wonderfully.

Their luggage will arrive shortly.
DAY 3,101 · REMINDER

A gentle note on walking routes

The jungle beyond marker 40 is very beautiful, and best enjoyed from marker 39.

Thank you for your cooperation.
DAY 3,098 · WEATHER

Sunshine all week, 27 °C

A light breeze from the east each afternoon, with a short warm rain at 16:10 on Thursday.

As scheduled.
DAY 3,096 · LOST & FOUND

A wristwatch, still ticking

Found near the Undertow hatch, running eleven minutes fast. The engraving on the back reads “for when you come back.”

Nobody has claimed it. Nobody is missing.
Orientation

Before you begin.

Every new resident watches the orientation film. It takes eight minutes. It answers most questions.
